Kitty Puff Quilt

Since Thanksgiving, I have been rather busy working to finish up this kitty puff quilt I started over a year ago. I made it for Stel & Jeff to give to Jeff's sister & her hubby for Christmas this year.

{Note: these photos are not meant to be a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a puff/biscuit quilt. They are only meant to show the progress I was making, & the finished quilt itself.}

This would be my work space, complete with my vintage Elna Supermatic sewing machine...my other baby. Betcha didn't know Keira had a sister, did ya!? No worries, neither does she. Ha!

Luckily, I already had a good head start on the project since I began working on it last year. Design, fabric prep, & ruffle construction were all finished. So I essentially had to just pick up where I left off. Here you can see some of the cute kitty squares. I like having friends around when I quilt!:-)

Chain of kitties! Sewing around three sides of each square to make what will become kitty puffs.

After adding a little fiberfill & sewing the final side closed... kitty puffs!

Then it's sewing the puffs into rows & sewing rows together.

As the rows come together you can start to see what the finished quilt will look like. I sure enjoy all those cute, little kitties! Note the twins at the bottom.

Then, pinning the ruffle & back to the front. What you see actually isn't the back fabric, it's part of the old bed sheet I used as a secondary fabric behind it, since the back fabric was a bit thin & you could see through it slightly.

And Oh, the pins, pins, pins, pins! These puff quilts are definitely pinning intensive! I should have worn finger protection, as my fingertips were on fire after a week! It's been a while since I've made one of these, so my memory was dulled a little in that regard. It takes 8 pins just to create each one of those 300 little puffs! Then there's the pinning of all the layers together. That doesn't even include the basting pins! Yikes!

And after wrestling with this quilt for a day or two...Voila! Finally finished!

So I took her outside to get some shots in natural light, hoping the colors would show up better. I think for the most part they did, except the violets. They are more vibrant & slightly more pink than they appear. My hubby says it's the white balance on my camera. I had hoped to make some adjustments & try again, but it started to rain.

Draped over the chair, with just a peek of the back.

A closer view.

And closer still. Why, hello there, you pretty tabby, you!

I absolutely love how the ruffle turned out! I adore the black & white checkers! Definitely its finest feature, wouldn't you say?

The front of the ruffle is blue & the back is full of kitties! Here's a closer look at the back fabric. It makes me think of kitty litter!... clean kitty litter, of course.

And a macro shot. I like those black kitties. They're not bad luck in my book!

There were a number of different kitties on this quilt. Here are some close up shots of my faves. Here's another set of twins, fraternal though.

A lucky, black kitty.

Adorable tabby.

And this guy is such a loveable, little chunk!

There you have it! This kitty puff quilt is now on it's way to Washington state, to hopefully spread some holiday cheer! whew!

  1. Shiloh: Your kitty puff quilt was fantastic. I tried imagining what it looked like as you mentioned you were working on it in your last blog. Wow!!!! it is even more spectacular than I imagined. I love it!! It is so beautiful. I love the little pictures of the cats and the ruffle. You are the one for detail. Even the back is decorated with material that looks like kitty litter. I could imagine the puffs when you explained how you sewed 3 sides together and stuffed the individual squares with filling in the 4th side.

I remember my Mother's quilting and how her fingers were bleeding from the contact pin pricks. It is a wonder she didn't get blood poisoning. I supposed you have thimbles? Bob used to help my Mother with quilting. The whole family did. Did you get Bob to help out at all?

How do you keep Keira busy while you quilt? The only time Heidi and Kathy bothered me was when I got the sewing machine out to sew doll clothes for Christmas.

    Love Joy

  2. Yeah, every time I say "ouch!", Keira asks, "what happened? what happened?", "I just poked myself with a pin, that's all", I tell her. I do have a couple different types of leather thimbles. I should have used them!:-) I only used one for the little hand sewing that I did to finish the quilt. No, Bob doesn't help with the quilting except to give me his opinion when I'm trying to pick out fabrics & colors. Also, with tolerating the entire kitchen table being taken up with fabric & sewing & machines, etc. We do need eat at the table more often, that's for sure! Oh, Keira isn't too bothersome. I make sure to give her mama/Keira time twice a day, and that helps immensely. She also wants to play doctor every time I poke my finger with a pin, so we play together while I keep sewing. Sometimes I have to remind her how many toys she has to play with. It does seem true that kids generally want all of your attention at the exact moment you need to give some to something else, doesn't it? LOL

  3. The quilt really is beautiful, Shiloh works well into the early morning hours. When I forget she is sewing I wandering around trying to figure out what that humming sound is-her sewing machine.

    1. Thank you both for the lovely comments about the quilt. I rather like it myself! I get better each time I make one of these little puff quilts. This was my fourth. Only to the hard-of-hearing in another room would my sewing machine hum! It's rather loud, actually. I'm sure the neighbors would agree!:-)
