A Peek at Our Week

Well, unlike the week prior, this past week was quite eventful. We began with Keira putting up her own artwork for display on the fridge. These are the drawings, according to Keira: blue: a big drop of water; green: a dolphin; orange: a crocodile floating sideways; right yellow: a raccoon; left yellow: a ghost; & red: scribbles!

Monday Night Football! Of course, this is about how well we can see the television when we're trying to watch any show, as Keira is the star of EVERY show!

She loves her some hot chocolate!

Even if it's not hot though, any chocolate will do.

Yes, this would be a car on fire at the service station across the street! On a related note, this Thanksgiving I will be exceedingly grateful for the absence of explosions at the Arco!

You could say that my fretting was freaking Keira out just a bit! This view from our front door, with Bob watering his flowers on the left, gives some better perspective. They had already performed an emergency shut down of all the fuel pumps & taken fire extinguishers to the car. In this shot the fire truck had just pulled up.

Between the pumps you can see the raised hood of the car with burn marks. And here come the firefighters with their water hose...to the rescue!

Although it was a bit chilly on this Thursday afternoon, we spent some time playing in the yard. I picked a medium sized bowl full of cherry tomatoes, & then started shooting me some nature! My favorite pink roses...

Why hello there, Grasshopper.

& Mama Mantis.
She has laid her eggs underneath another zinnia flower about two blossoms over. Bob says he cannot cut down the flowers now, since she is tending to her babies there.

I thought this shot of her turned out kinda cool!

Marguerite Daisy blossoms.

Keira, so proud of the maple leaves she has collected. We're going to have to go on a nature walk together, one of these days soon.

Little Keira, in the big side yard.

Goofing around with mama. Her happy face & giggles melt my heart!

This is how I get Bob to remember to do something important! haha! I left post-its all around the house, in conspicuous places. Then in the morning, he gathered them all up & posted a note for me that his mission was accomplished! That's how you do it!

Miniature roses on the front steps.

I rather like this shot from the underside of a fuschia blossom.

And a cool shot of some succulents from above.

Our pumpkin patch pumpkin, still gracing our entryway. We never did get around to carving our orange, gnarly friend. Oh well.

Saturday morning I was holding Keira's hand as we were walking along a dirt embankment, & I tripped & fell. I tore my jeans & scraped my knee but it was nothing, for in my falling I took Keira down with me, face first, down into the dirt & gravel. Oh, how my heart broke! I cried as much as she did, or perhaps more. After we got her cleaned up & she fell asleep in daddy's arms, I went to donate blood. I told the phlebotomist gal of our woeful morning, & as I laid there, she made this little rose for Keira out of the sticky bandages they have there. Keira was so touched. She said, "I wanna go there & tell her thank you...& tell her I love her!" But alas, the donation time had already expired & everyone was long packed up & gone. I promised Keira she could accompany me next time, & that hopefully we would see her again & she could tell the gal whatever she had to say.

Keira ended up with scrapes on her forehead, nose, & upper lip. Her upper lip was hurt the worst, as her teeth hit from behind as well, resulting in bleeding & ultimately, a fat lip. She's such a brave, strong girl. I keep trying to remind her of that.

Daddy wanted to take Keira out, to brighten her day. So we ended up at the theater to watch Wreck-It Ralph. We haven't been to the movies in nearly two years, so we were hoping Keira would enjoy it. She sat through about half of it, but lost interest & wanted to go play in the car while daddy finished watching. So we did. She had fun anyway, & that's what it's all about.

I remain heartbroken over the fall. Keira is a sensitive girl & has not been wanting to go into the bathroom under any circumstances these past few days. She finally told me, the night before last, that the reason why is because, "When I see my face in the mirror, it hurts my feelings." Oh, if there were only a dam that could possibly hold back my flood of tears! Leave it to daddy to save the day! We had put up extra mirrors in the bathroom at low heights because she likes to see herself, when she's dressed up, goofing around, etc. So he simply took them down. Now the only mirror is too high for her to catch her reflection & she is content. Of course, it didn't help matters much that at church on Sunday, the usual attention paid to her beautiful dress was completely displaced with questions about what happened to her face. Beyond the first day, I have tried to refrain from being the apologetic mama, but I am forever the reassuring mama though. Reassuring Keira that others mean no harm in asking about it, reassuring that beauty exists in spite of scratches and scabs and scars, reassuring that the time will come when all will be healed. As I put the medicine on her wounds each day though, Keira likes to remind me that I should have just let go.
Indeed.

  1. Dear Shiloh' Between you're and Keira's sensitive natures I cried too when I read about Keira's fall and all that entailed. I always knew that Keira was very sensitive, but I never realized how sensitive you are. You are truly a wonderful Mom. I am glad my brother is sensitive too. He helped ease the trauma of the situation...all will be well, and soon the pain will fade from our memories.

I loved the look on Keira's face while having hot chocolate, and chocolate raisens. I like the way her fair looked and the cute expressions on her face.

I never realized how close to your front door the Arco Station is. Does that road lead to the freeway?

Keira little drawings on the fridge were so cute. She is an artistic girl.

I can't believe the Zinnas etc are still in bloom. The rose was so beautiful.

I guess you take Keira to the hospital tomorrow. May all be well and may she attend your lovely Thanksgiving Dinner.

  2. Aww, thanks, Joy. No, the road we live on doesn't lead to the freeway, but we aren't far. Just a couple of turns & you can get to the on ramps. Yes, Keira is an artistic girl. She's painting as I type this, or rather, playing in her paints. She started out painting anyway. We actually took Keira to her appointment at the hospital today. She didn't end up having the esophagram though, as there was some trouble getting the authorization from the insurance due to a delay from the pediatricians office. Oh well. Now we wait & reschedule. Perhaps next week.

I saw on the new that you guys are getting oodles of rain up there in the Pacific Northwest! I hope all is well & you are staying dry & safe. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with Heidi & the grandkids!:-)xoxo

  3. Dear Shiloh: Yes the news on the rain was right. I have never seen rain like this. Just walking from my car to the doctors office I got drenched. It was just like getting out of the shower and your hair is wet through and through and it takes about 3 hours to completely dry. There were rivers in the streets. It usually rains a lot in January or Feb., but not in November. The rivers and streams always flood, but thank goodness we are high enough that the floods don't reach us. But the land a little lower than us is always sand bagged and does flood.

Isn't that maddening about the throat test. Why couldn't they have called you that they were having problems getting the necessary paperwork for approval. Oh well, life is what it is.

How are you and Keira today? Feeling a little better? It is a good thing that Bob took down the mirrors as I am sure it will take awhile for the scrapes and fat lip to disappear.

Shiloh, since Bob is too shy to join National Geographic maybe you should your self. I was mesmerized with the photography with the flowers. I especially liked the Zinnia that looked like painting instead of the photograph.

    1. So glad you're not getting flooded. I pray the rain stops soon. We are well, thanks. Keira is healing quickly & has already asked to have the mirrors back up. You are too kind. I am only a novice. Definitely not National Geographic material!:-) Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  4. I wanted to explain about my kids and movies when they were little. I have found that children under the age of 5 can not sit through a whole movie. They usually get disinterested around half way through and want to get down and play. Little short movies that only last about 1/2 hour at home on the TV, like Busy Town, Mickey Mouse, Max and Ruby are best. It was nice of Bob to take her to Wreck it Ralph--but remind him that children under 5 usually can't be still that long. I bet he loved it through.

Correction: in my last post I said "I like her fair", and I should have said "hair". Anyway, I wanted to correct because her beautiful face and hair were so perfect. Needs to be in a poster.

How often do they have fires at the Arco? I would fret too. You said something about explosives. How often does that happen???? I hope you can move to a safer place soon. Your yard is just to gorgeous though.

    1. Keira is pretty good at sitting through movies if they can manage to keep her attention. At one & a half she was watching 'Tangled' & 'Kiss Me Kate' from beginning to end. By the time she was two, the movies she would watch all the way through included 'Ratatouille', 'Over the Hedge', 'Shrek', 'Shrek II', & her new fave, 'Ella Enchanted'. Granted, most of them have singing & dancing &/or music though. That helps, I think. Bob did enjoy 'Wreck-It Ralph'. He likes animation for sure. Just a kid at heart I suppose. That was the first fire at the Arco that I've been aware of. I meant fuel explosions, that I was grateful there wasn't any. Yes, we do have a lovely yard, thanks to Bob & all his hard work & long hours spent. People stop all the time to say how lovely it is.

    2. By the way, Joy, I was going to tell you, that although you would never be able to tell by the photo, that grasshopper is like at least 4 inches long! That guy was huge! Miss Mantis is just a little smaller! Big insects we have here! It's 80 degrees here today. At night we're getting down to around 40. It's definitely nice here right now. Doesn't even feel much like fall. :-)
